St. Patrick's Day - Born on a Holiday, Celebrate Life!
St. Patrick's Day was never a highly celebrated holiday in my non-alcohol-drinking family when I was growing up. I was the kid in school who was pinched every year for not wearing green. Not only did I forget to wear green, I forgot it was even a holiday. I knew it had something to do with being Irish, but not much more.
It wasn't until I met my party-loving husband and his family that I began to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and treat every day as if it were a holiday. St. Patty's Day is JC's (my stepson) favorite holiday. He even named his car detailing and stereo installation company 'Lucky's Customs' after the Irish holiday. He and his wife wear green nearly everyday. When I saw her last week, my step-granddaughter had her ponytail pulled through the back of a baseball cap that had a shamrock on the bill and read 'Daddy's Lucky Charm'.
Why is this day so important to JC and his family? It's his son's birthday! My step-grandson was born March 17, 2004. McKevlin (an Irish name, of course) celebrated his third birthday with a party at McDonald's last Saturday - a week before the actual date of Mac's birthday.
JC and his family of four are planning a trip to South Carolina this weekend to continue the celebration with his mom, sister and extended family there. Naturally, a trip to the beach will be included in the celebration. Drinks, lots of guests and party favors will be part of the plan. The traditional green highly-spiked punch will be sipped until it's gone and the participants are slightly inebriated. Green beer is another standard beverage and even the cake and food will be dyed green.
And, I'm green with envy. My husband's ex-wife didn't invite us to the party, but we will have to hear about it until next March once JC and the kids return.
Even without sand in my shoes or a green cake, I know that each day of the year is special and should be celebrated by enjoying every moment and each opportunity it brings.
