Creative Christmas Decorating: Transforming Your Home Into Your Own Wonderland

Christmas time is one of the most exciting times of the year to decorate the home. Every year without fail, people take out boxes of lights and ornaments and try to make their homes look as festive as possible to celebrate the special holiday. The traditional Christmas trees, wreaths, and blinking lights are all very pretty indeed but if you try to think outside the box, you can make your house stand out from the rest even more. You don't even have to buy expensive materials or a whole new set of Christmas decorations to do this. With a little bit of creativity, you can transform your home into your own little wonderland come Christmas time.

People who are naturally artistic or creative may find it a lot easier to think up new Christmas décor ideas but even if you are not artistically inclined, you can find unique Christmas decorating ideas for your home. Start by leafing through design magazines or searching the Internet for sites that deal specifically with unique and creative Christmas decorations. Many sites out there will even teach you how to make the Christmas décors yourself so you can infuse your own style into each ornament and you can make sure your decorations are totally unique. Also, creating your own Christmas decorations usually costs much less than buying ready-made cookie cutter decorations from department stores.

Another way of decorating your home in a creative way is to veer away from the typical red and green color theme of Christmases past. There is no rule saying you can't use other colors for your holiday decorations. In fact, you can choose a different color each year to set the theme for your Christmas decorations. You can have a blue and silver Christmas this year and an orange one next year, for instance. You can even use black decorations if you want. Christmas decorating is all about expressing your individuality and all that matters is that you are perfectly happy with your choices.

Tying everything together in a color theme is not hard at all. A very easy way of doing this is by using ribbons. Pick out a ribbon in your chosen theme color and use it to decorate the backs of your dining room chairs and the stair banister. You can also use it to make bows you can put all over the Christmas tree and wreaths. Fabric is another material you can use for creative Christmas decorating. Find a nice fabric you can use as throw pillow covers, curtains or tablecloths. This is a very easy and inexpensive way to unify the Christmas theme in your home. Of course, you have to make sure not to go overboard with whatever theme you choose as this might make your décor tacky rather than elegant and tasteful.

The key to creative Christmas decorating is to find new ideas each year. Even if your unique theme elicits oohs and aahs from your guests this year, it doesn't necessarily mean it will still look nice next year. For one thing, it won't be new anymore so the novelty will be gone. For this reason, be open to new ideas, especially if you want to master the art of creative Christmas decorating.
