How to Really Make Money on the Internet

The internet is full of advertisements offering instant riches and well paid work-at-home jobs. Unfortunately, many of these will turn out be scams, advertising jobs which don't exist or jobs which involve recruiting others into the same scheme. Nevertheless, the internet does offer huge money making potential, and it has created quite a few multi-millionaires. The key to making money online is understanding what works.

If you are serious about making money online, you need a product or service to sell. Forget the job advertisements promising massive incomes just for introducing others to the company; these are just glorified pyramid schemes. So are the 'opportunities' which involve sending money to a number of people on a list. The truth is that every single internet millionaire has either created a service or marketed a product, which people want to buy.

The good news is that you do not need to create the product or service yourself. You can make money marketing other people's products as an affiliate of the company. Affiliate programs offer a percentage of the sales revenue of a product to the person making the sale. Virtually every type of product or service you can think of has an affiliate program. The large affiliate sites such as Commission Junction, Clickbank, Linkshare and Amazon have thousands of products you can promote. Choose a product you believe in and you believe people want to buy. Don't just select programs based on the amount of commission you will receive. Look for something that truly interests you. That way marketing it will be a pleasure not a chore.

Becoming an affiliate is free. Stay away from companies who ask for money just for signing up. After all, you are marketing their products for them. You are not a franchisee or an agent of the company; so long as you abide by the rules of the program, you are free to promote them any way you wish. You can terminate the affiliate agreement at any time and you are under no obligation to continue to promote their products.

The most effective way of promoting products on the internet is on a website or blog, or more recently a vlog. Email marketing is not a good idea, unless you have a double opt in list of prospects who have agreed to receive such mailings. If you have a very limited budget, you can sign up for a free blog at Blogger or Wordpress. However, if you are serious about a career as an internet marketer then your own website is a must. You can purchase domain names very cheaply, for under €10 or so. It is best if you can try purchase a domain which has a name related to the products you are trying to sell. You will also need to pay for a hosting package, although you can get reasonable hosting for under a few euros a month. Hosting packages that also come with extras such as website builders or templates are quite useful for putting together your first website.

You can choose to promote as many or as few products as you like on your website or blog. It is best to stick to one type of product or niche per website, as search engines will rank your website better if it has a clear focus. Write a few pages of good promotional content; describe the product you are selling clearly, illustrate its benefits and emphasise why people should buy your product. Submit your website to search engines, exchange links with other related sites and eventually your website will start to be shown in the search engines. Visitors will start to trickle in and very you will make your first sale.
