How to Register an Irish Domain Name

With the best DotCom names already taken, why not take advantage of the fact that you are based in the Republic of Ireland and get a Dot IE (.ie) domain? At last count there were only about 80,000 Irish domain names registered, leaving us with plenty of choice to get a good domain name or protect your brand. And getting an Irish domain name is not as difficult as you would think.

The only requirement for getting a .ie domain name is to have a registered business in Ireland, it's that easy!

If you do not already have a Registered Business Name in Ireland (RBN) don't despair! It's easier to get one than most people would lead you to believe.

There are a number of different business registration possibilities available in the Republic of Ireland, but this is beyond the scope of this article. I am going to assume that you will be applying for 'Registered Business Name' for the purpose of registering a .ie domain name.

Here are the steps to get your Irish Domain Name:

  • Got to the Companies Registration Office website and download the RBN1 form.
  • Fill out this form and go to the CRO office in the Dublin City Centre

It will cost you € 40 to register your new business name. You can also register to fill in an online form and pay the Companies Registration Office by cheque or Postal order, this is a cheaper option at € 20.

If you register the business name personally (ie. Paper Filing) you will immediately receive a receipt with the company details. This form is sufficient for most Irish domain registrars to initiate the domain registration procedure. Although it may cost more for the paper filing, it does mean that you can register the domain name immediately, otherwise you may have to wait up to four weeks.

Now you can register you Domain name, although there are many Registrars for the .ie domain space, I personally recommend Register365 as a domain registrar. The current price with them for a .ie domain name is € 25 per annum, with discounts available for longer terms. (as of July 2011) . Register365 can also help you with the hosting of your website.

That's basically all there is to getting your own Irish Domain name. Not only will you have a website that will be given preference in the Google Ireland search results, but you also have a good chance of a great name that is already long gone as a DotCom.
